How Do You Build Muscle Without Working Out?

A number of factors go into muscle growth, including supplementation and nutrition, but if you don’t put a significant amount of stress on your muscles, they simply won’t grow. While many supplements and diet programs claim that you’ll magically build muscle and become more ripped than ever simply by consuming their product, it just isn’t possible. Let’s take a look at why this is the case.

What Makes Muscles Grow?

The primary growth factor for muscle growth is the activation of satellite cells. When muscle fibers are damaged through intense exercise like High Intensity Interval Training and resistance training, satellite cells repair the fibers by fusing to each other and to the muscle fibers, resulting a cross sectional growth of the muscle (Kravitz 2004).

How Do Supplements Affect Muscle Growth Then?

Don’t get me wrong. Supplements and nutrition can affect muscle growth. HOWEVER, they cannot stimulate muscle growth by themselves. Most supplements and nutrition plans cause changes in your hormones, which then affect your satellite cells. Some supplements stimulate the release of anabolic hormones like growth hormone and testosterone. These hormones stimulate the uptake of amino acids into the muscle and enhance protein synthesis. I want to reiterate the fact that without a proper exercise program, these hormones will have very little effect on muscle growth. Even taking supplements are serious as anabolic steroids (which you should NOT do) will not result in any noticeable muscle growth without proper diet and exercise.

To sum things up, it is NOT possible to build muscle without working out in any signficiant manner. If you really want to get leaner, develop some toned arms and a nice stomach, you’re just going to have to work hard. I hate to say it!
